Dutch FM meets with Serbian counterpart, deputy PM

Dutch Foreign Minister Frans Timmermans and Serbian Foreign Minister Serbia Ivan Mrkić had a meeting in Belgrade late on Tuesday.

BELGRADE Dutch Foreign Minister Frans Timmermans and Serbian Foreign Minister Serbia Ivan Mrkic had a meeting in Belgrade late on Tuesday. They discussed a “common European future” for the two countries, stressing that there are no outstanding issues between them. Dutch FM meets with Serbian counterpart, deputy PM “I informed Minister Timmermans about our plans concerning the negotiations with the European Union and the course of our talks with Pristina. The Netherlands supports the policy pursued by Serbia and views efforts made by this government positively. We discussed bilateral relations only in brief, as they are steadily improving,” Mrkic said after the meeting. Mrkic said that there is much room for improvement in the area of economic cooperation, and Timmermans agreed on that, pledging to urge Dutch investors to invest in Serbia, particularly in its agriculture sector, much more. "I believe firmly in the European future for Serbia and the process of negotiations that has started and that will end up in Serbia’s membership of the EU," Timmermans said. It will be good for both Serbia and Europe and I am pleased that we can talk about our common European future, he added. He expressed satisfaction about the achievements of the Serbian government in the past year, stressing that the Netherlands strongly supports these efforts. When it comes to Belgrade’s negotiations with Pristina, the Dutch foreign minister said that Belgrade and Pristina "should put the past behind them and become partners in a common Europe," and the Netherlands offers them strong support in doing so.
