Screening meeting in Brussels focuses on police topics

The second day of the EU explanatory screening for Serbia on Chapter 24 was marked by discussions on the fight against organized crime.

BRUSSELS, BELGRADE The second day of the EU explanatory screening for Serbia on Chapter 24 was marked by discussions on the fight against organized crime. Topics also included smuggling of people, weapons and ammunition, with particular focus on the fight against smuggling and illegal production and trade of narcotics. Screening meeting in Brussels focuses on police topics According the Serbian Ministry of the Interior, in these areas, Serbia’s legislation conforms to globally-accepted standards such as the fundamental instruments of the United Nations and Council of Europe, and the European Union has enacted a number of regulations and decisions which specify the implementation of global standards. The Serbian delegation to the Brussels-based meeting is comprised of Minister without Portfolio in charge of European Integration Branko Ruzic, head of Serbia’s EU accession negotiating team Tanja Miscevic, and a number of experts from the police, judiciary, defense and other security bodies. Also participating in the ongoing round of acquis screening is a delegation of the Serbian Ministry of the Interior, headed by State Secretary Vanja Vukic, who heads Serbia’s negotiating team for Chapter 24. Today's meeting begun with discussion on specific issues related to cooperation and exchange of information between financial and intelligence units aimed at increasing efficiency in the detection and prevention of money laundering and terrorist financing, the Interior Ministry said. In addition, police experts asked a number of questions relevant to the introduction and implementation of EU standards in Serbia’s legal system. Additional questions were asked by experts of the Ministry of the Interior who followed the meeting via video link and who are in constant communication with the participants in the explanatory screening meeting. The delegation of the Serbian Interior Ministrzy (MUP) is headed by State Secretary Vanja Vukic, head of the negotiating group for Chapter 24 within Serbia's EU accession talks concerning justice, freedom and security. EU experts presented the legislative framework on EU external borders and the Schengen system which makes room for free flow of passengers, goods and services, and the members of the Serbian Interior Ministry asked a number of questions concerning the implementation of EU standards in Serbia's judiciary, states a release issued by the Serbian Interior Ministry. Additional questions were posed by representatives of the Interior Ministry who are actively following the screening via video links in Belgrade. Efficient implementation of security standards on the border calls for a new methodology of approach by border police, customs service and other services participating in border control by setting up a system of integrated border management, states the release.
