BELGRADE Prime Minister Ivica Dacic has said that it was in Serbia's interest to cultivate the best possible relations with Germany. "It is very important for us to have a positive stand from Germany so that the first inter-government conference could be held by the end of January next year," Dacic told a gathering entitled "Asymmetrical Reality in Serbia-Germany Relations," held in Belgrade. "Best ties with Germany in Serbia's interest" Beta reported that he recalled that the screening for Belgrade's accession talks had started in Brussels, but added that Germany and Britain had submitted a non-paper document on the negotiation framework, which was not in favor of Serbia, as each area would be conditioned with the normalization of relations with Pristina. Dacic stressed that Serbia's effort to accelerate its EU path relied considerably on Germany's support, adding that Belgrade was also expecting certain conditions from the EU's leading country, Germany, noting that such conditions would be acceptable so long as they did not affect "the essence of Serbia's statehood and national interests". "We were all eager to see Angela Merkel in Serbia several years ago. However it was a catastrophe, a catastrophically poorly prepared meeting. She met with the then president, Boris Tadic, and it was the end of what would later turn out to be completely unrealistic estimates of what sort of support could be expected," Dacic explained.
