BELGRADE Foreign Minister Ivan Mrkic says he does not see a statement made by a German ruling party official as a new condition or a threat. “It is one of the opinions, and I did not take it as a new conditionality or threat,” Mrkic said at a joint press conference with the Czech Foreign Minister Jan Kohout in Belgrade. FM sees "no new German conditions or threat" Andreas Schockenhoff told Belgrade-based daily Vecernje Novosti that he believes that Serbia was still not ready for the start of the negotiations with the EU as the pace of its implementing the Brussels agreement between Belgrade and Pristina and internal reforms is far too slow. Commenting on the statement, the Czech Republic's minister said that it should be viewed in the context of the election campaign in Germany. When it comes to Serbia's membership of the EU, I can say that entry in the EU is always preceded by a long-lasting process that the Czech Republic also had to go through, Kohout said. "I am confident that the Serbian government knows what kind of job lies ahead and I am sure that we will be able to welcome Serbia into the European family very soon," said Kohout. Asked whether he thinks that the previous government of the Czech Republic decided to recognize the independence of Kosovo too early, Kohout said that the support for the independence in the Czech Republic was not complete as both its politicians and population were half in favor and and half against it. But the Czech foreign policy is characterized by continuity, which applies to all issues we are dealing with, Kohout said. We respect the decisions made by our predecessors, whatever we may think of them, he added. Asked what the fact that five EU member states have not recognized Kosovo means for Serbia, Mrkic said: “It is no secret that we would be happier if nobody had recognized Kosovo, but now we are focused on the organization of the situation in Kosovo-Metohija and the implementation of the Brussels agreement,” said Mrkic.
