Mechanism for reintroduction of visas adopted

The European parliament (EP) adopted on Thursday by majority vote the mechanism which makes it possible to temporarily reintroduce visas.

BRUSSELS The European parliament (EP) adopted on Thursday by majority vote the mechanism which makes it possible to temporarily reintroduce visas. This applies to citizens of countries from which false asylum-seekers are coming, including Serbia. Mechanism for reintroduction of visas adopted Tanja Fajon, former EP rapporteur for visa liberalization, strongly opposes the mechanism and she said immediately after the voting that there was no danger that it would be implemented for Western Balkan countries soon. A total of 631 MP voted in favour of the mechanism, while 236 were against it. On Tuesday, the EP had a heated debate on the proposal which was criticized by socialists, social democrats, liberals and Green Party members "because it makes room for limitation of freedom of movement, primarily for citizens of Western Balkan countries," Tanjug reported. The mechanism could be adopted during the next meeting of EU's justice and internal ministers this or next month, and will come into force when it is published in the EU official gazette. Tanjug

Tanja Fajon, former EP rapporteur for visa liberalization, strongly opposes the mechanism and she said immediately after the voting that there was no danger that it would be implemented for Western Balkan countries soon.
