BRUSSELS European Council President Herman Van Rompuy says the Brussels agreement unblocked the process of Serbia's EU membership "while Kosovo is now closer to the EU." Rompuy said that this turned a new page in the relations between the two sides. "Serbia's progress toward EU unblocked" The agreement reached with the mediation of EU High Representative Catherine Ashton "set the Kosovo-Serbia relations on the road to normalization and, of course, this spirit must be maintained," according to Van Rompuy. He was addressing "heads of EU delegations posted abroad," Beta said in its report on Wednesday. The EU official added that the strength of the union was felt especially when it comes to the policy which leads to "entry of the Western Balkans into the EU," and that a confirmation of this was Croatia's accession. Van Rompuy said that he hoped that in the relations between Belgrade and Pristina, "the turned new page will start a favorable lively development across the region." He said that immediately after the relevant decision of the European Council in June to launch negotiations on EU membership with Serbia and the Stabilization and Association Agreement with Kosovo, he traveled to Belgrade and Pristina to convey a political message about it, noting that the welcome he received "leaves no doubt that it is well understood and respected." Van Rompuy also told EU diplomats that "on the crossroads between the Middle East and the Balkans, Turkey remains a key partner for the European Union," but he also said that Turkey's relations with the EU deteriorated after the "strong reaction of the authorities to peaceful opposition demonstrations." The president of the European Council noted that at the November meeting in Vilnius relations with eastern neighbors of the EU will be of great importance, and made it clear that the cornerstone for this will be the possible signing of the association agreement with Ukraine. Van Rompoy also spoke about the economic situation in the EU, as well as foreign policy challenges, such as the turmoil in Egypt and the civil war in Syria. (Tanjug, file) Beta
