KOSOVSKA MITROVICA - Director of the Serbian government Office for Kosovo-Metohija conferred with officials of the Kosovska Mitrovica local self-government. Director of the Serbian government Office for Kosovo-Metohija Aleksandar Vulin and Belgrade City Assembly Speaker Aleksandar Antic conferred with officials of the Kosovska Mitrovica local self-government. Kosovska Mitrovica and Belgrade cooperating Officials of Belgrade as the capital of the Republic of Serbia have come to Kosovska Mitrovica as the capital of northern Kosovo-Metohija and this is a good way to show how we should fight for Serbia's presence in the area, Vulin said. Kosovska Mitrovica Mayor Dragisa Vlaskovic said that Antic was informed about the problems in the city and that this matter was met with understanding and a promise that Belgrade will provide as much support and assistance as possible. Vlaskovic expressed satisfaction over Antic's wish for Kosovska Mitrovica to sign a twinning agreement with Belgrade and said he hopes this will be done by November 8 at the the latest, when Kosovska Mitrovica marks its patron day. Antic said that Vulin and himself were informed about the local problems in terms of public utilities in Kosovska Mitrovica and the possibilities for Belgrade's engagement in the search for solutions. In this part of Serbia, priority issues include the status, the preservation of Serbs in the area, as well as many other matters connected to the basic living conditions which need to be looked into, Antic said. On the one hand, we have the country that is tackling state issues and investing great efforts so as to preserve Serbs in the area, and on the other hand, those in the local self-government, running big public utility systems and municipalities should help in the second set of the problems, Antic said. The agreement on twinning between Belgrade and Kosovska Mitrovica is both a strong political message and a basis for Belgrade to provide more assistance to the individuals running the city and all its citizens, primarily through solving basic problems connected to public utilities, Antic noted. /Tanjug, file/ Tanjug
