BELGRADE An Interpol red notice issued for businessman Stanko Subotic after a cigarette smuggling investigation was launched against him in 2006, has been rescinded. The warrant issued by Interpol Serbia and containing his photo and other personal data has been removed from the Interpol website. Arrest warrant for Stanko Subotic rescinded The change occurred at the order of the Belgrade organized crime court after Subotic posted bail in the amount of EUR 538,000 on Friday by taking out a mortgage on his home with the court named as the beneficiary. He is now free to enter Serbia and will appear at the hearing set for September 17, defense council Radoslav Tadic told Tanjug earlier. Ten days ago the court granted a motion from Subotic's defense team asking the court to set bail and allow Subotic to await the trial out of prison. The organized crime prosecutor's office appealed the decision but the appellate court is yet to rule. Subotic was not present for the June 17 start of a repeat trial against him on charges of heading a group responsible for cigarette smuggling during the 1990s. In line with changes introduced to the Criminal Code on April 15, Subotic is now charged with abuse of position by a responsible person and faces up to ten years in prison. His previous charge was abuse of office which commands a sentence of up to 12 years. Earlier this year the Belgrade Court of Appeal overturned the first-instance verdict sentencing Subotic in absentia to six years in prison for abuse of office and members of his group to sentences ranging from ten months to four and a half years for cigarette smuggling. Subotic is charged with heading a group which smuggled cigarettes from Macedonia into Serbia where it sold them to physical and legal entities in 1995 and 1996. The group gained profits totaling EUR 28 million and USD 6 million at the expense of the state budget. Subotic had been on the run since 2006, but he has been living and working freely in Switzerland. (FoNet, file) Tanjug
