BELGRADE The reforms Serbia faces in the coming years are much more important than the start date for the accession talks with the EU. This is according to French Ambassador to Serbia Francois-Xavier Deniau. French ambassador "surprised by significance given to date" "France was in favor of giving Serbia an earlier start date for the talks with the EU because it believes the Serbs will honour their agreements,"he stated on Wednesday, adding that "the date was essentially not important." This diplomat told Tanjug he was "a little surprised by the significance given to the issue in the public over the recent weeks." "A month more or less will not change a thing in Serbia's future and its relations with the EU," he noted. According to Deniau, "joining the EU is less a goal in itself and more a tool to facilitate and speed up the reforms the country needs." "Serbia has invested a lot of effort to harmonize its laws with the EU's, but reforms are still necessary," he said. "The battle against corruption needs to be systematic in all areas that have been infected by it, including the justice system," he noted. Serbia has achieved important results in the battle against organized crime and trafficking, and its international cooperation is satisfactory, the ambassador pointed out. "France will continue to support Serbia in its reforms," he stated. "It is important to take maximum advantage of EU integration by conducting the necessary reforms," Deniau remarked. "An important French investment is under way, the expansion of the Tigar-Michelin factory in Pirot, which should create hundreds of new jobs," he added. (Beta, file) Tanjug
