BELGRADE President Tomislav Nikolic "sent the message that he wanted to contribute to the victims being respected, said REKOM regional coordinator Natasa Kandic. Kandic believes he did so "by appointing the Court of Appeal judge as a personal representative in an expert group of the Regional Commission for Establishing the Facts about War Crimes (REKOM)." "Nikolic not afraid to talk about his wartime past" Kandic said for Tuesday’s Danas newspaper that she thought that with his gesture Nikolic “sent a message to all the victims, politicians and statesmen in the region that all the victims are important and equal in death”. “Personally, I think, having in mind the President Nikolic’s past, that his support to establishing the facts about war crimes and victims will contribute to clarifying the fate of the missing, the number of which does not decrease in recent years. Apart from that, Nikolic showed that he is not afraid to talk about his wartime past, which will change the picture of him”, said Kandic. REKOM advocates establishing facts about war crimes committed in the nineties in conflicts in former Yugoslavia. Kandic, who heads this group, has been suspecting Nikolic over the years for involvement in war crimes in village Antin in Croatia, which is why Nikolic sued her for defamation. A municipal court brought a decision in Nikolic’s favor, or rather decided that Kandic had committed the criminal act of libel. The Belgrade District Court annulled the verdict and sent it back for retrial, but in the meantime the case exceeded the statute of limitation. Kandic said for Danas that she believed that Nikolic’s decision to appoint Sinisa Vazic as his personal envoy was a good choice, since this judge was well acquainted with the possibilities and limitations of the trial procedure concerning victims, as well as the historical and social need to establish what had happened in the past. Before Nikolic, "envoys were appointed by the presidents of Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro and Kosovo, and two members of the Bosnia-Herzegovina Presidency," wrote Danas. (FoNet, file) Danas, VIP
