ZAGREB The German parliament has set "very difficult conditions" before Serbia to join the EU, President Nikolic told the Croatian Radio-Television (HRT). He added that the EU "as an organization" never sought the recognition of Kosovo and Metohija from Serbia. "German parliament sets difficult conditions" "There are conditions of the German parliament which will be very difficult for EU entry because they are motivated by the German recognition of Kosovo," Nikolic said in an interview with HRT. Asked how "much leeway there was to negotiate about it," Nikolic said he would discuss it directly with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. The president expects to get Merkel's response to the question whether the conditions adopted by the German parliament actually conceal a demand for Serbia to recognize Kosovo before joining the EU. "The EU as an organization in its every report and conversation with us has said that it does not interfere in the matter, and that is not asking for the recognition of Kosovo," Nikolic said in the interview given during his visit to Zagreb, carried by RTS. Nikolic was in Croatia as head of a delegation attending the ceremony marking the accession of that country to the EU, and said that Serbia would continue to cooperate with Croatia. "I congratulate Croatia on joining the EU and wish all the best to all Croatian citizens," Nikolic said, adding that Croatia also has a lot more to do as a member of the European family. As he pointed out, Serbia and Croatia will continue to work at a much higher level. "Serbia and Croatia have mutual requirements which I expect both countries to seriously consider. When such requirements are addressed, nothing could spoil our bilateral relations," he was quoted as saying. (FoNet, file) RTS
