LISBON Serbia deserves to get a positive decision "in every sense" and to granted a start date for EU membership talks by the European Council. This is according to Serbian Foreign Minister Ivan Mrkic, who spoke for the Portuguese news agency Lusa during his recent visit to Lisbon. "Serbia deserves positive decision, talks date" Asked what are Serbia's estimates concerning the prospects for opening EU entry talks, given that Germany is still opposed to the idea, attaching it to the full implementation of the agreement on the normalization of relations with Kosovo that was signed in Brussels in April, Mrkic said that there is certain reluctance in Germany to set the talks date for Serbia. However, we hope that the opinion would not prevail, as many decision-makers in Germany are aware of the effort that the Serbian government has made and are now voicing full support, Mrkic said. Commenting on the relations between Portugal and Serbia, he said that bilateral relations are excellent in every regard. The only difference is related to the issue of Kosovo, Serbia's southern province. However, even that is not an obstacle to further strengthening our relations and friendship. There is deep understanding, cooperation and even greater interaction between us, as we know that our future is in the EU. Speaking about Croatia's forthcoming EU entry, the Serbian foreign minister said: “Yes, we are very happy that Croatia will join the EU. That fact is encouraging for Serbia too, as it gives room for even greater steps toward that goal." Asked whether he could confirm that Serbia is no longer in recession, taking into account that a rise in industrial production in the first three months of 2013 amounted to 5.2 percent, according to the official data, Mrkic said that there has been an increase in industrial production and exports. Measures have been taken to reduce the budget deficit and Serbia hopes that it will finish this year with a growth rate of two percent, Mrkic said. (Tanjug, file) Tanjug
