Slovenia is in favor of giving Serbia an EU talks start date as soon as possible, Serbian and Slovenian FMs Ivan Mrkic and Karl Erjavec have said. Slovenia in favor of date for Serbia Slovenia is convinced Serbia deserves to get a date this year, especially considering what has been achieved in recent months, including the Brussels agreement on normalization of relations between Belgrade and Pristina and the implementation plan, said the Slovenian foreign minister. This would send the right message to the whole region, considering the fact Croatia will become a full-fledged EU member on July 1, he said. Mrkic said Slovenia has consistently supported Serbia in all meetings where EU enlargement is under discussion. "Now we reviewed the situation ahead of June 28, when the European Council will make the decision, and after everything we learned in talks with our colleagues, our impressions are mostly positive," he added. The two ministers said bilateral relations are excellent and friendly, especially in the political and economic spheres, with Mrkic adding they are probably the best they have ever been and the two countries are "great friends." Erjavec said the two countries do not have any major open issues and Slovenia considers Serbia a strategic economic partner. He said 400 Slovenian companies operate in Serbia, where they employ some 30,000 people, while trade totals EUR 1 billion. Erjavec noted that Serbian companies have also invested over EUR 1.5 billion in Slovenia. Mrkic and Erjavec said they also discussed succession and are convinced the issue will be resolved amicably. Mrkic recalled that Slovenian President Borut Pahor recently visited Belgrade and said Prime Minister Alenka Bratusek will also come to Serbia. (Tanjug) Tanjug
