ROME Aleksandar Vucic has said that Serbia had done "everything to obtain a start date for EU entry talks and deserved to get it as soon as possible." Serbia's deputy prime minister made the remarks in Rome on Wednesday as he met with Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta. Deputy PM meets with Italian officials in Rome Vucic underscored that he expects that Italy, "as Serbia's greatest friend," will offer it assistance in getting the date as soon as possible, and thanked for the support up to this point. Letta said that he will discuss the matter with leaders of other EU member states, and underscored that the cooperation with Serbia will be one of the priorities of the Italian government. Italy will assist Serbia not only in terms of economic cooperation, but also on the political road toward the EU, Letta said. Vucic and Letta talked about Italian investments, bilateral cooperation which was qualified as extremely good, Vucic's office announced. Vucic voiced gladness about an increase in Italian investments in Serbia. He also met Franco Frattini, president of the Italian Society for International Organization (SIOI), with whom he discussed Serbia's EU integration. The former Italian foreign minister said that at a meeting of the Expert Group on Foreign Affairs of the European People's Party (EPP) in Brussels on June 25, he will call on EU representatives to grant Serbia the date as soon as possible. "The time has come for Europe to be fair toward Serbia. Italy will be fully dedicated to its role of helping Serbia get a date," he was quoted as saying. Vucic, who is also serving as the Serbian defense minister, is due to have a meeting and working lunch with his Italian counterpart Mario Mauro. Later in the day, Vucic will also talk with Senate Speaker Pietro Grasso, and meet members of the Italian-Serbian Business Council. Vucic's visit to Italy, the first since the formation of the Letta government, is taking place prior to Italian Foreign Minister Emma Bonino's visit to Belgrade. (Tanjug) Beta Tanjug
