The ceremony included military and state honors, and the visiting Ukrainian leader was accompanied by the chief of the general staff of the Serbian Army, Gen. Ljubiša Diković.

"A flame of memory will always burn in our hearts for the people who gave their lives for the peace and happiness of future generations. Together with the Serbian people, we bow in respect to the fallen heroes," Yanukovych wrote in the memorial book.

The Ukrainian president arrived here on Thursday and held a meeting and a joint press conference with his Serbian counterpart, Tomislav Nikolić.

Yanukovych is due to meet on Friday with Serbian PM Ivica Dačić.
