Slovakia backs opening of EU talks with Serbia

Slovak FM Miroslav Lajčak stated in Belgrade on Tuesday that Slovakia supports the start of EU membership talks with Serbia, without new conditions.

BELGRADE Slovak FM Miroslav Lajcak stated in Belgrade on Tuesday that Slovakia supports the start of EU membership talks with Serbia, without new conditions. Lajcak informed his Serbian counterpart Ivan Mrkic about the mood in the EU in terms of the expected decision on a date for the opening of accession talks with Serbia. Slovakia backs opening of EU talks with Serbia Lajcak and Mrkic both agreed that optimism is the prevailing mood in the EU, which is confirmed by an abundance of evidence in favor of Serbia as a result of the decisions and behavior of its leadership, the statement reads. The Slovak minister expressed his appreciation for all Serbia has done with regard to reforms in the country and the foreign policy. Lajcak and Mrkic also exchanged information about everything that is relevant for Serbia at this point, and about a regional summit that will take place in Bratislava on June 12-13. The summit will be attended by Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic. Lajcak met with Mrkic at the start of his visit to Belgrade. Later on Tuesday, he will be received by President Nikolic, Prime Minister Ivica Dacic, and First Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic. During the day, Lajcak stated that his country supports initiation of Serbia's accession talks without setting additional conditions, and he underscored that the implementation of Brussels agreement between Belgrade and Pristina was "crucial." Lajčak and Mrkić both agreed that optimism is the prevailing mood in the EU, which is confirmed by an abundance of evidence in favor of Serbia as a result of the decisions and behavior of its leadership, the statement reads.
