ADDIS ABABA Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic is today participating in a special African Union summit marking the Union’s 50th anniversary in Addis Ababa. He said he was determined to contribute to strengthening of all forms of cooperation with African nations. “Serbia has good relations with African countries” Nikolic noted that Serbia and African countries had a long tradition of good relations. “A decade-long and in some cases a century-long cooperation between Serbia and African countries continues and it is developed on healthy relations and mutual respect,” he stressed. The Serbian president added that he was sure that pan-Africanism and African renaissance would inspire peace in some parts of Africa as well as renewal and progress. “Good relations between governments of African countries and Serbia are just a part of friendship that exists between the Serbian people and African people,” Nikolic said. “I am proud of my people’s role in the process of liberation of African people, of our contribution to anti-colonial fight led by liberation movements, of Belgrade’s position in the Non-Aligned Movement,” he added. The president also stressed he was proud that thousands of African students were studying at Serbian universities. “On those foundations of solidarity and brotherhood, which was historically confirmed in difficult times, I am ready to continue to work on the improvement of our relations together with leaders of African countries,” he stressed. Nikolic underscored that Serbia had been contributing to UN peacekeeping operation in Africa. “Thousands of Serbian troops have been deployed to missions in Africa. Many countries still vividly remember actions of Serbian peacekeepers who professionally and impartially, in cooperation with soldiers from other countries, worked on reaching and preserving peace,” he said. The president added that Serbian troops were still present in DR Congo, Liberia, and Ivory Coast and that they would soon be deployed to Mali. Nikolic met with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso on the sidelines of the Addis Ababa summit. They congratulated the Serbian leadership on their effort to reach a fair and sustainable solution for the Kosovo issue and wished Serbia to get a date for the beginning of the EU accession negotiations in June.
