BELGRADE The ruling German Christian Democratic Union (CDU) is not in favor of granting Serbia a date for the beginning of the EU accession negotiations at the moment. This is according to Faculty of Political Sciences professor Predrag Simic. Ruling German party “not in favor of granting EU talks date” He added that the CDU MPs considered the Brussels agreement a “facade”. Simic said that the Germans therefore demanded a law on the implementation of the agreement to be adopted because “it is clear that not many things can be implemented by June”. He added that Belgrade officials were rather nervous about German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle’s visit to Belgrade. “Croatia will join the EU on July 1 and it is known that the EU door will be closed in the next ten years. Opening of the (EU accession) negotiations with Serbia now would be a good sign for Serbia even though the negotiations would last long. Aside from Germany, there are other countries that have more pressing issues to deal with than the enlargement. The start of the negotiations with Serbia still symbolizes that the EU is attractive to some countries, for solving of some issues. If we do not get the date, this logic will cease to apply,” Simic pointed out. He stressed that the U.S. still believed that Belgrade “should give more than Pristina”.
