BELGRADE Germany’s Bundestag will decide on a date for the start of Serbia’s EU accession talks at the last minute, daily Vecernje novosti has reported. According to the daily, German MPs will make a decision only after the EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule has filed a report on the implementation of the agreement. The daily’s sources explained that Fule is expected to inform the EU foreign ministers about the implementation of the Brussels agreement in late June. The German parliament will form an official stance whether Serbia should be given the date or not based on the report. “The debate in Bundestag will be held in the morning on June 27 while European leaders will meet the same day, in the afternoon,” the daily has learned from Bundestag. The German MPs want to make sure that the Brussels agreement between Belgrade and Pristina is fully implemented. German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle will pay an official visit to Belgrade on Monday, a day before Serbian and Kosovo Prime Ministers Ivica Dacic and Hashim Thaci will meet in Brussels. Ruling German Christian Democratic Union (CDU) MP Andreas Schockenhoff will visit Belgrade, Pristina and Kosovska Mitrovica in June in order to “determine the facts” regarding the implementation of the agreement. Germany is a key country for Serbia’s further step on the EU pathway and Bundestag will decide whether Serbia should be give a date for the start of the EU accession talks just hours before the voting in the European Council on June 27, Večernje novosti writes.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel cannot support a decision to grant Serbia a date for the start of the EU accession talks in Brussels without the MPs support.

The daily’s sources explained that Fule is expected to inform the EU foreign ministers about the implementation of the Brussels agreement in late June. The German parliament will form an official stance whether Serbia should be given the date or not based on the report.
