BELGRADE PM Ivica Dacic says the statements of some Church dignitaries during a rally in Belgrade on Friday were an inappropriate gesture toward the state. Dacic added that no one disputes the right of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) to present their views on the government. Dacic: What did God do to deserve this But the Church should not be making open threats to institutions of the state, he was quoted as saying. According to him, the authorities and the Church have complentely separate tasks in the state. Dacic made his comments in the United States, where he is currently on a visit. Reacting to statements made by Metropolitan of Montenegro and the Littoral Amfilohije and retired bishop Atanasije Jevtic at a protest against the Brussels agreement, Dacic told Tanjug that SPC representatives have no right to threaten anyone. The prime minister believes that the statements were “totally inappropriate.” Dacic said he was "rendered speechless" when he heard about the rhetoric employed by Amfilohije and Atanasije, which, according to him, is “a step backwards.” “Nobody has the right to threaten others and to behave as if they live in the time of the Inquisition,” he said. Amfilohije lead a prayer service for Kosovo-Metohija, praying for the repose of the Serbian government and parliament and those killed in Kosovo, while Atanasije compared Dacic and late Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic. In a telephone statement for the Beta news agency, Dacic said he was "sometimes wondering what dear God did to deserve to be represented on earth by such people." (Tanjug, file) Beta Tanjug
