NOVI SAD Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) deputy leader Igor Mirovic expects 100,000 citizens to sign a petition for early provincial elections by the end of the week. The petition also calls for dismissal of Vojvodina Executive Council Chairman Bojan Pajtic. SNS expects 100,000 citizens to sign petition “We have collected more than 80,000 signatures in the first ten days and we expect to collect around 100,000 signatures in the next three-four days, meaning during two weeks of the petition signing,” Mirovic told reporters ahead of the Vojvodina assembly’s session. He expressed satisfaction that an assembly debate on a declaration on protection of Vojvodina’s constitutional and legal rights, proposed by the provincial government, had been postponed because the document did not reflect a general opinion about the situation in Vojvodina. Mirovic believes that it is good that the opposition’s objections have been taken into consideration but he said he did not agree with “constant attempts to introduce and vote in the declaration and all its elements in Vojvodina’s assembly”. “SNS MPs and members of the opposition will stand up to it through the work of the Committee for Constitutional and Legal Affairs, at sessions of the provincial assembly and with means outside the assembly, such as campaigns to collect signatures against the declaration,” he said and stressed that the text of the declaration would be analyzed in detail at the committee sessions. “The opposition is ready for a dialogue on the document with representatives of the authorities,” Mirovic said and added that a “political response” to the draft declaration, based on the analysis, would be drafted. “We are against the declaration but that does not mean that we will not participate in a debate that should result in our concrete, political and professional response to the declaration’s elements,” the SNS official stressed. He once again called for early provincial elections because he did not see any other “long-term way out of the crisis that Vojvodina is in”. Igor Mirovic (Beta, file) Tanjug
