BELGRADE Head of the EU Delegation to Serbia Vincent Degert says an agreement between Belgrade and Pristina is an important step that will improve Serbia’s EU prospects. He expressed belief that both sides would confirm the deal soon. Belgrade-Pristina deal is “important step toward EU“ “I think a very important step has been made. We have had dialogue for three years and we have made significant progress but I think that the decisive point has now been reached,” Degert told reporters on Saturday. He added that Belgrade and Pristina were now expected to confirm the agreement they had reached. “This will of course improve prospects of the EU accession for Serbia and the entire region,” he explained. Degert also congratulated Serbian Prime Minister Ivica Dacic on his “decisive involvement” in the dialogue and assessed that the agreement was possible thanks to efforts made by Dacic and the entire Belgrade negotiating team, including First Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic. He praised the Serbian authorities’ commitment, noting that “there were differences in the government and in the public regarding the agreement” and pointed to great efforts and persistence of EU High Representative Catherine Ashton who acted as a mediator in the talks. “Now we have to look to the future and face many other challenges,” Degert concluded.
