BELGRADE Serbia's constitutional obligation is to protect the interests of our compatriots abroad, Tomislav Nikolic told the Council for Relations with Serbs in Region. “We need to do more, to do better than we have been doing so far. Serbs must see themselves as Serbs and know that the state cares about them, wherever they may be,” the Serbian president said during a session of the council in Belgrade on Thursday. "Government must care for Serbs everywhere" The meeting highlighted in particular the importance of preserving the Serbian culture and language, Serbian Church and Serbian schools, the president's press office said in a release. Jelena Kis, president of the Center of Emigrants, was elected the council's secretary, while members elected include Serbian Prime Minister of Serbia Ivica Dacic, parliament Speaker Nebojsa Stefanovic, Foreign Minister Ivan Mrkic, Minister of Education, Science and Technological Development Zarko Obradovic. Other members include Minister of Culture and Information Branislav Petkovic, Finance Minister Mladjan Dinkic, President of the Vojvodina provincial government Bojan Pajtic and Director of the Office for Cooperation with Churches and Religious Communities Mileta Radojevic. The Council also includes representatives of the Serbian Orthodox Church, Director of the Office for Cooperation with the Diaspora and Serbs in the region Slavka Draskovic, Presidential Advisers Marko Djuric, and a number of other officials.
