Commissioner: Public has right to know truth about milk Addressing a press conference in Subotica before the start of a round table on the drafting of a bill on whistleblowers, Sabic said that "the whole situation surrounding the milk issue is rather confusing": “Under the Law on Free Access to Information of Public Importance, any information concerning human health is of utmost importance. The public has the right to be told the information, and there is no reason to withhold it." “It is obvious that we have a rather confusing situation involving controversial information. Without intending to side with anybody, I only want to say that Serbia's citizens have the right to a fully accurate and complete information surrounding this issue,” said Sabic. On the sidelines of the meeting, Transparency Serbia Program Director Nemanja Nenadic said in a statement for Tanjug that the milk issue is an example of how important it is that all the information of significance for the population is made available to citizens and that state authorities do their job as they should. Nenadic noted that it is necessary to publish information about the quality of food on a regular basis, rather than only in cases of doubt such as this one. “It is necessary to publish data on the control of the products we buy regularly. These data should be presented to the citizens in a clear and straightforward way, so that they may know who and when carried out an inspection, and what it showed," he told Tanjug. According to Nenadic, practice has shown that the inspections are either not conducted regularly or methods applied vary from case to case, which results in "the worst" kind of situation, leaving people with no reliable source of information.
