Speaker: Date to mark start of new development "The Serbian government and parliament will do everything to make sure Serbia becomes an EU member as soon as possible," Stefanovic said at Monday's public hearing on the future of the country's EU integration held at the national parliament. Stefanovic noted that the pace of Serbia's progress will depend on the country itself and its readiness to tackle reforms and social change. "The EU is Serbia's key partner in the process of supporting reforms in our country. Developing relations with the EU is a foreign policy priority for Serbia," said the parliament speaker. Stefanovic said the work is not nearly done and he is not fully satisfied with what the parliament has done, but this is even more motive to press on with reforms and get everyone involved. "The final and key process will be when we get a date for starting accession talks with the EU. Once technical talks have been opened, the European integration process becomes irreversible and binding, a clear and completely pure goal," he said. According to Stefanovic, Serbia's EU aspirations are not merely declamatory. "This is the sincere desire for people in Serbia to live better and reach the standard of developed countries," said the speaker. (Beta, file) Tanjug
