PIROT Serbian PM Ivica Dacic has said that Serbia wanted to join the EU not because someone was forcing it but because it would ensure a better life for its citizens. “Anyone who says that someone is forcing us to join the EU is lying. We are going in the EU so the people would live better, instead of letting our children feel like they are going to the West when they go to Bulgaria,” Dacic said in the southern town of Pirot on Saturday evening. PM: EU integration will ensure better life for citizens He stressed that heroism today did not mean to “give one’s life for nothing but to open new jobs and build roads”. The prime minster stressed that the government’s job was not only to talk high politics, inter-state relations, crisis in Serbia and other parts of the world but to focus on what was happening in the country, how the people lived “with the lowest wages and pensions in the region, highest interest rates in the region and the most volatile currency in the region”. “That is why I do not call on the people to give their lives for lost battles but to do so for those they can win and that is that Serbia continues its EU pathway. We are not making a euro-step. This is not a euro-step but a Serbian step because I am a Serbian prime minister,” Dacic said. “If the EU does not suit us, we can easily get out,” he added. The prime minister noted that the south of Serbia was an important part of the territory and that the state must not allow that the population declined there. He said that the only way to prevent people from moving away from the south was to create conditions for normal life that would be the same as in other parts of the country.
