Serbian president meets with Chilean counterpart

Serbia’s President Tomislav Nikolić has met with his Chilean counterpart Sebastian Pinera and discussed bilateral relations and economic cooperation.

SANTIAGO DE CHILE Serbia’s President Tomislav Nikolic has met with his Chilean counterpart Sebastian Pinera and discussed bilateral relations and economic cooperation. The two president met on Friday ahead of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC)-EU summit in Chile. Serbian president meets with Chilean counterpart Nikolic thanked Pinera on Chile’s principled support in preservation of Serbia’s territorial integrity and on a decision not to recognize Kosovo’s unilaterally declared independence. Pinera expressed full understanding for the challenges Serbia had been facing in the previous period and gave full support to Serbia’s EU pathway. The Serbian president noted that Serbia had done a lot of things in order to get a date for the beginning of the EU accession negotiations. He added that a resolution and platform for the continuation of the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue on the highest political level had been adopted, as well as a decision to implement all agreements that had been reached, “no matter how painful they might be to Serbia”. Nikolic stressed that Serbia led a stern combat against corruption and crime and was working on improving economic situation of its citizens. Pinera stressed that the two countries bilateral cooperation was excellent, adding that Chile’s fast-growing economy had a lot to offer to Serbia in order to overcome the crisis. He explained that the Chilean economy was expanding despite the economic crisis and stressed that the unemployment rate was around five percent while the country’s debt rate was less than seven percent. Pointing out that there were many opportunities for cooperation, Pinera said he hoped that diplomatic-consular missions would soon be open in both countries that would enable further improvement the cooperation. The Serbian president came to Chile on Friday and will have a series of bilateral meetings until January 28. Nikolic will today meet with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Cuban President Raul Castro, Romanian President Traian Basescu and Portugal's PM Pedro Passos Coelho.
