"EUR 110mn invested in southern Serbia in 12 years"

In the past 12 years, the Coordination Body for Preševo, Bujanovac and Medveđa has invested a total of EUR 75 million in the three municipalities.

BUJANOVACKA BANJA In the past 12 years, the Coordination Body for Presevo, Bujanovac and Medvedja has invested a total of EUR 75 million in the three municipalities. The international community at the same time invested EUR 35 million, Zoran Stankovic, the director of the body, has said. "EUR 110mn invested in southern Serbia in 12 years" At a ceremony marking 12 years since the founding of the Coordination Body held in Bujanovacka Banja, Stankovic said that this institution is a bridge between local and national authorities. He added that the body has played the key role in the reconciliation of all ethnic communities in southern Serbia and improving the situation in the field of infrastructure. This year, the body has supported development of small and medium-sized enterprises in the area with RSD 40 million, Stankovic said, adding that the funds will be raised to RSD 60 million in 2013. Bujanovac Municipal President Ragmi Mustafa said that ethnic Albanians still cannot use their language, alphabet and flag in full, adding that the Coordination Body should make sure that the Albanians' position in these areas is improved. Medvedja Municipal President Slobodan Draskovic thanked the body for the contribution made in that past 12 years and advocated additional support in the field of economy. Head of OSCE South Serbia Office Eric Manton pointed out that the Coordination Body is the international community's key partner, and that multi-ethnic police and local authorities have been formed in this area thanks to this cooperation. The Serbian government decided to form the Coordinating Body in December 2000, less than a month after armed ethnic Albanian extremists in the area engaged in all out confrontation with the police and military. On November 21, 2000, the extremists massacred three police officers in Dobrosin, and the next day occupied the Ground Safety Zone - a five kilometer-wide, 95 kilometers long stretch of land along the administrative line with Kosovo and Metohija.
