Everything depends on Serbia now, say ministers

BRUSSELS Ahead of the start of an EU summit, heads of state and government from the EU welcomed the ministerial conclusions adopted earlier in the week. The conclusions "opened the possibility of Serbia starting the accession talks by June 2013", Tanjug is reporting. Everything depends on Serbia now, say ministers The EU politicians also "stressed that everything was up to Serbia", according to the news agency. The talks could start in June, but it depends on Serbia above all, Slovenia's Prime Minister Janez Jansa told reporters. Jansa was one of the few participants willing to talk to reporters about enlargement, since the conclusions of the ministerial meeting were expected to be confirmed. Denmark's Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt said she welcomed the conclusions and the enlargement debate. Although the conclusions gave Serbia the green light for the talks to start during Ireland's chairmanship, Luxembourg's Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker said Serbia would not become a member of the EU overnight. Croatian Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic, whose country is expected to join the EU, also commented to say that he "hoped Serbia would enter the talks as soon as possible, adding that it was Croatia's interest as well".
