STRASBOURG Serbia’s Justice Minister Nikola Selakovic met with Council of Europe (CoE) Secretary General Thorbjorn Jagland on Wednesday in Strasbourg. Selakovic was the first Serbian justice minister to visit the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. Serbian justice minister meets with CoE official Jagland said after the meeting he was glad the Serbian minister had come to Strasbourg with a lot of good news regarding reforms which should be Serbia's response to its obligations stemming from the Convention on Human Rights. The CoE secretary general also welcomed Serbia's efforts to reduce the number of applications to the European Court of Human Rights. The Serbian minister told Tanjug that in addition to concrete changes to laws, he also informed Jagland about the decision to decriminalize defamation and insult by amending the Criminal Code. "Removing defamation from the list of criminal offenses is extremely important for strengthening the freedom of the press and freedom of expression in Serbia. At the same time, this proves that Serbia remains a leader in the protection and promotion of human rights, including the right to free expression," said Selakovic. The minister also told Jagland about Serbia's initiative for the passage of a new convention on international assistance in property seizure. This meeting concluded Selakovic's two-day visit to Strasbourg, during which he met with top CoE officials. On Wednesday, he met with President of the European Court of Human Rights Dean Spielmann, Head of the CoE's Directorate General of Human Rights and Legal Affairs Phillipe Boillat, and Chairman of the Venetian Commission Gianni Bochicchio, whom he informed about the steps Serbia is undertaking in judiciary reform. Jagland said after the meeting he was glad the Serbian minister had come to Strasbourg with a lot of good news regarding reforms which should be Serbia's response to its obligations stemming from the Convention on Human Rights.

The CoE secretary general also welcomed Serbia's efforts to reduce the number of applications to the European Court of Human Rights.

The Serbian minister told Tanjug that in addition to concrete changes to laws, he also informed Jagland about the decision to decriminalize defamation and insult by amending the Criminal Code.
