BELGRADE Defense ministers of Serbia and Italy Aleksandar Vucic and Giampaolo di Paola met on Tuesday in Belgrade to discuss military cooperation. The two officials "greed that the two countries have had a long-standing friendship and that Serbia belongs in the European Union", Tanjug is reporting. Serbia "belongs in EU", say defense ministers Vucic told the press after meeting Di Paola at the Palace of Serbia that they discussed military-educational, military-medical and military-economic cooperation, but also Serbia's political future. "What is very important for the citizens of Serbia is that they have a true ally and a great friend in Italy, and that Serbia might count on Italy's support and assistance, and not just on its EU path," Vucic said. According to Vucic, his Italian counterpart wanted fields of cooperation to be defined and ways for promoting the cooperation to be proposed, and this is something that will be worked on. Vucic pointed out that Serbia cooperated with Italy in several multinational operations and that Italian and Serbian soldiers always seemed like the closest friends. They always carried out their tasks in the best possible way, he added. Di Paola stressed that Italy truly believes in Serbia's European future and added that strong political ties and friendship between the Serbian and Italian people is lasting, regardless the changes in governments. He told the press that Italy wants to deepen and improve the quality of bilateral cooperation between the two countries. Di Paola also said that the Serbia-Italy relations should be viewed through the prism of the EU. "As one of the EU founding countries, Italy is working on this and it believes that the EU cannot exist without Serbia. Serbia should do its part of the work on this path, and this might be painful, but it is something that needs to be done," Di Paola concluded. (Beta) Tanjug
