BELGRADE The Serbian parliament elected a member of the High Judicial Council (VSS) and confirmed an agreement between the Serbian and Hungarian governments on Thursday. Zoran Stojanovic, a criminal law professor at the Faculty of Law in Kragujevac was elected as a member of the VSS. MPs confirm intergovernmental deal, elect VSS member He was proposed for the position at a joint session of law faculty deans on November 5. Parliamentary Committee on Judiciary, State Administration and Local Self-Government Chairman Petar Petrovic called on MPs to vote for the proposal, adding that Stojanovic’s results and actions proved he was the best choice and that he would help the VSS be even more efficient. Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) MP Judita Popovic said that the VSS was under “serious political pressure” and that such pressure was unacceptable in any independent body. The MPs then continued the debate on the confirmation of the agreement between the Serbian and Hungarian governments on border control in road, rail and water traffic which was signed on January 24, 2012. 139 MPs voted in favor of the proposal, two were against and two abstained from voting. Education Minister Zarko Obradovic said during the debate that the agreement additionally improved relations between the two countries and that Serbia showed that it wanted to improve relations with its neighbors. He added that the agreement would enable faster transport of people and goods. Obradovic noted that according to the agreement, the two countries would conduct a joint operation at border crossings aimed at preventing illegal migration and criminal offenses.
