BELGRADE President of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) Vuk Jeremic believes that the continuity of Serbia's disunity around vital state issues should be interrupted. Otherwise, said this MP and member of the now opposition Democrats (DS), "there is a danger of becoming extinct in the maelstrom of the current regional and international turmoil". Jeremic: Continuity of discord should be broken Jeremic spoke for the Sunday edition of the Belgrade-based newspaper Blic to add that key political actors should unite over issues concerning Kosovo and Metohija and the defense of Serbia's sovereignty and territorial integrity. “It is only logical that the policy is proposed by the government, for the people gave it the mandate to do it and I think the opposition should ... follow it,” Jeremic said, expressing regret about the discord also having also been present even while the party he is a member of was in power. Commenting on a criticism by Enver Hodzaj, who serves as foreign minister of the government in Pristina, and who criticized Jeremic's statement about Kosovo not having a chance of becoming a United Nations member while he was the UNGA head, Serbia's former foreign minister noted that "renegade territories neither have, nor will they ever have the right of access to UN's institutions, as long as the UN Charter is respected.” “Serbia, which chairs the UN this year, will, with the help of her friends, make sure that it remains that way,” said the UNGA president. Speaking about the situation in the Democratic Party, Jeremic, who spoke against Boris Tadic's decision to withdraw his candidacy for DS president, says he was not the only one who thinks that “it did not have to end this way". Asked why he thought Tadic's move was bad, Jeremic said he believed that an “honest and democratic competition was a healthier way of decision-making than behind-the-scenes dealings.” Asked to comment on media reports that he was being mentioned as the successor to Ban Ki-moon at the helm of the world organization, Jeremic stated that the next UN secretary-general should come from Eastern Europe. "It is true that some countries have started to speak about Serbia's candidature for that position, but Ban Ki-moon has several years of his mandate ahead of him, we are the closest associates, and for that reason, it would be inappropriate for me to make any comment," Jeremic concluded.
