BELGRADE France is against abolishing the visa-free travel regime for Serbian citizens and there has been no change in its position. This is according to the country's ambassador to Serbia, Francois-Xavier Deniau. "France against reintroduction of visas for Serbians" France considers Serbia a democratic country and does not see its citizens as potential applicants for political asylum in France, Deniau told reporters on Thursday after the opening of an exhibit dedicated to the EU Anti-Trafficking Day. He said any fake asylum seekers from Serbia applying for asylum in France would be making a wrong move. The French ambassador believes the problem with fake asylum seekers affects many countries, and France is in favor of ministers sitting down to find a solution other than the abolishment of the visa-free regime. Even if this is needed, it would represent a sort of suspension and would be in effect for a limited period, he said. Deniau recalled that France was the country which called for a suspension of visas for Serbian citizens, adding its position had not changed. According to the diplomat, there are different ways of confronting this problem, including stricter control at borders and prosecution of those who attempt to come into the EU in this manner.
