BRUSSELS The EC is very concerned over the wave of asylum seekers from the western Balkans and has pointed out the consequences unless the problem is solved. This was reported from the European Commission (EC) on Monday. EC concerned over asylum seekers from Balkans The mechanism to introduce visas has not been established yet, but it will be discussed at the ministerial council on October 25, spokesperson for the EU commissioner for home affairs Michele Cercone told a news conference. The commission has received a letter by 6 interior ministers from EU members asking to initiate a mechanism to introduce visas for certain countries in the Western Balkans. Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom's spokesperson refused to list the countries in question, but news report have revealed that the letter refers to Serbia and Macedonia. The countries that want to introduce visas are Germany, France, Austria, Luxembourg, Belgium and the Netherlands, Cercone explained. The commission can, if it determines that the request is valid, propose to the European Council to urgently suspend the visa liberalization for certain countries and the council can then adopt that through a simple majority vote, he noted. Cercone told Tanjug that the European Parliament had to agree with such a decision as well.
