“State may keep part of its share in Serbian media”

BELGRADE Serbian Culture and Information Minister Bratislav Petkovic has stated that the state could keep a part of its share in media. He said that the most important thing was to prevent concentration of ownership, i.e. to “prevent the same people from owning half of the Serbian media”. “State may keep part of its share in Serbian media” When asked how the state would withdraw from the media if there were no interested buyers, the minister said that the buyers would show up and did not rule out a possibility that they would come from abroad. “It is also possible that the state will keep some part of the ownership in some media,” Petkovic told daily Vecernje novosti. He added that a new way to finance the Radio Television of Serbia (RTS) should be found. The minister announced that a new package of media laws would be adopted by March 2013, adding that they would enable freedom and independence of the media in accordance with European standards and transparency of ownership.
