BELGRADE Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) leader Vojislav Kostunica has praised the new Serbian government for “not bowing blindly to Brussels anymore”. However, he said that it was not good that the government still strived toward the country’s EU membership. DSS leader welcomes government’s attitude toward EU “Brussels sees Serbia clearly to the integrated management of crossings. Undoubtedly, this is Serbia’s border for the EU, however, the new government sees that it has stopped being so rosy in the EU so the question is whether it would survive in this form and it also sees that blackmails and pressures from Brussels have become blatant,” Kostunica said at the DSS Main Board meeting in Belgrade. Commenting on the government’s decision to respect all the agreements that have been reached, the DSS leader said that this was the state’s obligation but that it was not Serbia’s obligation to honor agreements that were unconstitutional and “that are creating an independent state of Kosovo in Serbia’s territory”. He said that the DSS would therefore launch a proceeding before the Constitutional Court of Serbia for the assessment of constitutionality of all regulations based on the Brussels agreements and submit a request to ban the implementation of all regulations until the Court completes the assessment. The DSS leader said that one of the reasons why the West wanted to prevent his party from getting to power is the fact that it had “ruined their plans to impose the Ahtisaari plan on Serbia”. “It is our responsibility to advocate the policy of neutrality because we will not be able to keep Kosovo if the agreements that the EU is imposing on Serbia are implemented,” Kostunica said and added that his party would be a responsible and principled opposition in parliament. Noting that “it is not understandable that Brussels’ interest are closer to us than interests of our own people”, he welcomed the fact that the new government no longer mentioned that “the EU has no alternative”. He added, however, that the government still was not ready or willing to seriously consider the neutrality policy advocated by the DSS. Commenting on Vojvodina, the DSS leader said that the province’s Statute needed to be harmonized with the Serbian Constitution”. According to him, it is absurd to change the Serbian Constitution in order to harmonize it with Vojvovina’s Statute. Kostunica said that Serbia was one the “verge of poverty”, that the economy had been destroyed and that the Serbian territory had been “offered for sale at the world market”. He stressed that the economic and social situation were quickly deteriorating. Vojislav Kostunica (Beta, file) Tanjug
