KOSOVSKA MITROVICA Several hundred Serbs gathered in the Brdjani settlement of northern Kosovska Mitrovica to prevent groups of Albanians from starting to build houses there. Those houses, the locals are saying, are meant to provide homes for ethnic Albanians who never lived in the area before, while it remains unclear who issued the permits for the start of construction works. Serbs prevent start of construction works Kosovska Mitrovica Mayor Krstimir Pantic joined the protesters on Thursday to say that they were up against "yet another provocation of the Albanian authorities (in Pristina) in order to destabilize Kosovska Mitrovica and cause clashes." "The goal of the Albanian authorities is to forcibly move in Albanians who never before lived in Kosovska Mitrovica, and in this way change the ethnic structure of the northern part of the town. They had the same plan for Suvi Do, where they intended to give away 138 municipal plots of land in order to build apartments and houses for Albanians from the regions of Drenica and Srbica," the mayor said. The protest lasted one hour and resulted in the cancellation of the planned start of works, after which the Serbs left the location. There are some 150 houses in the Brdjani settlement. The neighborhood is home to about 2,000 Serbs, including 600 elementary school children. The town of Kosovska Mitrovica itself is ethnically divided into its southern, Albanian part, where no Serbs live, and northern, majority Serb part, that has ethnically mixed Albanian and Bosniak neighborhoods. Northern Kosovska Mitrovica is also the largest town of the Serb-dominated north, which rejects the authority of the government in Pristina, as well as the ethnic Albanian unilateral declaration of independence made four and a half years ago.
