NICOSIA Cyprus supports Serbia's continued EU integration and will not recognize Kosovo, the country's Defense Minister Demetris Eliades has said. Eliades made the statemetn during his meeting with visiting Serbian counterpart Aleksandar Vucic in Nicosia on Tuesday. "Support for EU path and defense of sovereignty" Vucic stressed the need to develop economic cooperation between the two armies, offered Serbian arms and munition for export to Cyprus and invited Eliades to visit Serbian defense industry companies, the Serbian Defense Ministry said in a statement. Vucic thanked Cyprus for its stand on the Kosovo issue and underscored the significance of that country's support for Serbia's EU integration. The Serbian people are not just good partners, but also friends, and that is the view of the entire nation, and not just the Cypriot government, Eliades noted, emphasizing his country's support for Serbia's efforts towards joining the EU. Cyprus will never recognize Kosovo as a matter of principle, but also of international law, he stressed. Eliades expressed pessimism regarding a solution to the Cyprus issue and thanked Vucic for the participation of Serbian troops in the UN peace mission in Cyprus, underlining that the Serbian soldiers were among the best. This meeting marked the start of Vucic's three-day visit to Cyprus, where he is to attend a meeting of the EU defense ministers and meet with eight defense ministers from the EU and candidate countries. During the visit, Vucic will visit the Serbian troops engaged in the UN peacekeeping mission in Cyprus and meet with the head of the mission and the peacekeepers' chief of staff, the release says.
