Japan to continue helping Serbia, says official

Serbian FM Ivan Mrkić and First Deputy PM Aleksandar Vučić met in Belgrade with Japanese Parliamentary Senior Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Ryuji Yamane.

BELGRADE Serbian FM Ivan Mrkic and First Deputy PM Aleksandar Vucic met in Belgrade with Japanese Parliamentary Senior Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Ryuji Yamane. Mrkic and Yamane agreed during their meeting on Tuesday that the two countries should continue to foster bilateral relations, and the Japanese official said that his country will continue to provide assistance to Serbia. Japan to continue helping Serbia, says official The two officials voiced satisfaction with Serbia and Japan's cooperation and fully agreed on further improvement of bilateral relations in all fields, especially in agriculture, the Serbian Foreign Ministry released in a statement. Mrkic expressed gratitude for Japan's assistance to Serbia, especially for an extremely favorable loan in yens granted for the project of flue gas desulphurization in the thermal power plant Nikola Tesla. He also voiced satisfaction with the announcement that Japan is considering a possibility of granting another loan for a wastewater treatment project in Belgrade. Yamane said that his country will continue to help Serbia as a contribution to increasing the rate of employment and improving the economic situation in the country. Minister Mrkic was especially pleased that this visit took place during the marking of 130 years since the establishment of bilateral relations between Serbia and Japan, which began with correspondence between Serbian King Milan Obrenovic and Japanese Emperor Meiji. During a separate meeting between Ryuji Yamane and Aleksandar Vucic both officials said that bilateral relations are at a very high level and agreed to work on their further improvement. Vucic thanked Yamane for the donations and aid which the Japanese government has provided to Serbia, voicing his interest to further expand their cooperation, most notably in economy, culture and sport, as well as interest in new Japanese investments in the Serbian economy. He stressed that the Serbian people "extremely appreciate the Japanese nation" and that Japan as a state is "hugely popular in Serbia". Yamane affirmed that Japan perceives Serbia as a friendly state and is carefully observing its EU integration process. He voiced his gratitude for Serbia’s assistance to the Japanese people in the wake of the disastrous earthquake last year, adding that his country deeply appreciates this gesture.
