BELGRADE EP President Martin Schulz has explained that the statement that "Serbia should recognize Kosovo if it wants to join the EU" was "his personal estimate". The head of the European Parliament, who comes from Germany, also noted that this personal appraisal "only says what is evident for most". "Evident that Serbia has to recognize Kosovo" "The statement that Serbia should recognize Kosovo if it wants to become an EU member state is my personal estimate based on reality and pragmatism, and what I said is evident for most people," Schulz said in a statement for Belgrade-based daily Blic. He has added that by that statement, he only "accentuated the inconsistency that exists within the EU, given that certain member states have recognized Kosovo, while five have not done that yet". "I would like to be completely clear, I am neither in the position, nor I want to impose some additional conditions. I said I would leave decisions of that kind to diplomats, negotiators and governments," Schulz said. Asked what his statement, saying that at the end of the road one should expect the mutual recognition between Serbia and Kosovo within the EU, actually meant, he said the meaning is that in the future he sees "Kosovo and Serbia in the EU", and that at the end of that process, "a way has to be found for a compromise, mutual recognition". When asked whether some new conditions would be attached to Serbia's start date for the accession talks, he said that "all conditions had already been made clear". Asked whether it would be reasonable for Serbia to expect the start of entry talks before the summer of 2013, Schulz voiced "a sincere hope" that it would be the case.
