BELGRADE Jelena Trivan has resigned as a Democratic Party (DS) deputy leader, a day ahead of a Main Board session. Trivan sent a letter to DS leadership, explaining the reasons for her resignation. Trivan resigns as Democratic Party deputy leader “The real defeat of the DS did not happen in the elections but when the DS started being self-absorbed and started forgetting about citizens who voted for it and about its members,” she pointed out. “The party members have been political persecuted for months, they are being sacked, they endure threats and blackmails and the DS does not have the strength to put an end to it and protect its own people from those to whom the internal party polemics have become more important,” the former deputy leader explained. She also noted that the Democrats were exposed to a public lynch and that some were trying to blame DS leader Boris Tadic for everything. “With the concept of collective guilt, those who are guilty for such perception about the DS, for bad staffing solutions, for wrong political decisions, for poor work and running of the country are trying to hide,” she stressed. Trivan added that she did not want to be a part of any process that would hurt the DS. “The party, that has lasted for 22 years, needs to be more important than any personal ambition or vanity. Citizens, who justifiably expect us to protect democratic and civil values of the society, and not our own careers, need to be more important. I am convinced that any scenario aside from the agreement and joint work cannot bring anything good to anyone. I am convinced that the DS cannot afford to renounce its most successful people,” she underscored. “Because of all this, I resign,” Trivan concluded. “I remain loyal to my party’s policy and its loyal member who will fight until the end in parliament for the DS that made this country a European and decent state,” she added.
