BELGRADE Former Belgrade team chief Borislav Stefanovic claims that abolition of Serbia’s institutions in northern Kosovo is one of the formal requirements of the EU. He stated that Serbia needed to close its institutions in the north in order to get a date for the beginning of the EU accession negotiations. “Abolition of institutions in north is formal EU condition” “Formal conditions for the obtaining of a date for the beginning of the EU negotiations and for Serbia’s further EU pathway are agreements on electricity and telecommunications with Pristina and abolition of our institutions in northern Kosovo,” Stefanovic told daily Danas. The Democratic Party (DS) Presidency secretary added that the new government got off to a very bad start given that it was “using recycled ideas” instead of drafting a precise and realistic plan for Kosovo. According to him, one of such ideas is to have Kosovo Albanians live like Germans in Belgium “because it was possible in 1992 but not in 2012”. He also accused government’s Office for Kosovo Director Aleksandar Vulin of “resorting to blatant populism and demagogy”. “However, it is good that Vulin said that ‘painful concessions’ awaited us because it shows that there is some reality but speculation on giving up on the footnote is interesting. The things they would crucify us for now go without any reaction,” Stefanovic was quoted as saying. He explained that “there is no deadline for the implementation of the agreements” but that he would prefer if they were implemented immediately. The former team chief believes that Serbian Orthodox monasteries, churches, northern Kosovo and property and rights of Serbs south of the Ibar River will be discussed “if the negotiations begin”.
