BELGRADE Serbian Foreign Minister Ivan Mrkic has says the president and government will determine the format of Belgrade's talks with Pristina in the next several weeks. He noted that negotiators and topics would also be determined, adding that the first reactions of the international community about raising the negotiations to a political level, especially in Brussels, were positive. FM: Format of talks with Pristina to be determined soon “Certainly, the Foreign Ministry should not be tasked with the talks with Pristina, because it is our (Serbia's) internal issue. But we need to be aware that it is necessary to reach a wider political and social consensus on what to do next in terms of Kosovo-Metohija,” Mrkic told Belgrade-based daily Vecernje novosti. He said that the ministry would be defending Serbia's position about the need to respect the UN Security Council Resolution 1244 and other international legal norms. Asked to comment on Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic's request for the dialogue on the Kosovo issue to include the UN and on a statement of his that he would lobby for that, Mrkic said that once the strategy of UN involvement in the negotiations was worked out, Serbia would everything that was up to it to make it happen. “At this point, it is premature to speak whether we will opt for submitting a new resolution or for asking from Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to designate a representative himself,” said the foreign minister. Asked if he expected any new requirements in respect of Kosovo for Serbia's making a further step towards the EU, such as to open a Pristina's office in Belgrade and vice versa, Mrkic responded in the negative. “No. No one is setting out any new conditions. All the international partners I have talked to were categorical in that. Our tasks are defined in the opinion issued by the European Commission and European Council late last year,” he explained.
