Commenting on Serbian President Tomislav Nikolić’s statement that he will not recognize Kosovo even if the price was Serbia outside the EU, Ahtisaari said:

“If they want to join Russia, let them go there. Concessions are unacceptable, in Bosnia-Herzegovina or anywhere else”.

“Serbia should not be allowed to join the EU until it recognizes Kosovo. Serbia lost its rights in Kosovo a long time ago. It treated Kosovo citizens badly for years,” the Nobel peace prize winner told Zagreb-based daily Večernji list.

According to him, five EU member states that have not recognized Kosovo’s independence helped Serbia’s cause.

“But I am convinced that it will change soon,” Ahtisaari was quoted as saying.

He expressed hope that “the 100th country will soon recognize Kosovo,” stressing that 91 countries had recognized its independence.
