BELGRADE Parties in Serbia have not released names of 120 donors who gave more than RSD 109mn for the financing of election campaigns, Transparency Serbia NGO says. Transparency Serbia Program Director Nemanja Nenadic said that that this was about 60 percent of the reported value of the donations for the parliamentary and presidential elections according to the parties’ reports. Parties withholding names of donors, NGO claims He believes that this shows the scale of violation of the regulations. Nenadic repeated that all the parties were obligated to publish the names of the donors whose donations are worth more than an average salary in Serbia, which is about RSD 38,000, on their websites within seven days. The NGO believes that some parties have violated the law in that respect. Transparency Serbia Director Vladimir Goati has stated that he did not know how else the information that some parties had spent more money for their campaigns than they had received from public sources could be explained. He stressed that it had been determined that there were discrepancies between the received and spent funds in some parties but that they were yet to be investigated. “If we rule out a possibility that the parties created money out of nothing with the help of alchemy, the competent organs should poke around their reports on the campaign financing,” Goati stressed. He added that it was very important because “some influential people from the shadows are trying to achieve a redistribution of influence in the political scene” with such financing of certain parties. Commenting on the current political situation, the NGO director assessed that the parties were trying to position themselves the best they could after the elections in order to secure the biggest possible share of the spoils. He did not want to assess the determination of the future government in combat against corruption because he believes it is still early to do so bearing in mind that the government has not been elected yet. However, Goati said that the previous government could hardly get a positive mark when it came to combat against corruption. He stressed that the previous government had made many mistakes in combat against political corruption and that it lacked determination to tackle it. In order to back his claims, Goati pointed to the Suitcase affair which did not get its epilogue in court even though the people responsible for it were well-known. B92 Beta
