BELGRADE Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) leader Vojislav Kostunica says the Constitutional Court's ruling “is a historic decision that will stop further dissolution”. The Constitutional Court disputed numerous regulations of the Law on Establishing Jurisdiction of Vojvodina. DSS welcomes Constitutional Court decision on Vojvodina “This is a victory of the state-building policy and the policy of protection of essential national interests which led the DSS to start a long and persistent fight to dispute the anti-constitutional Statute before the Constitutional Court,” Kostunica told Beta news agency. He expressed satisfaction over the fact that the Constitutional Court “has restored the Serbian citizens’ faith that the fight for respect of rights and constitutionality is meaningful and that the law can defeat voluntarism and arbitrariness expressed by those who passed the anti-constitutional Statute”. “It is of utmost importance for the Constitutional Court of Serbia to stand up to all kinds of lawlessness. The Constitutional Court’s decision to abolish the anti-constitutional jurisdiction of Vojvodina’s Statute has a far-reaching importance and represents an important event for Serbia’s future,” he pointed out. Kostunica added that the Serbian citizens “can be pleased because the country’s constitutional order and law have been defended from injustice and separatism, which shows that Serbia has the future if it develops as a legally defined country”. The Constitutional Court has disputed around 20 regulations of the Law on Establishing Jurisdiction of Vojvodina, including the ones that Novi Sad is a capital of the province and that Vojvodina can have its office in Brussels, the Constitutional Court stated on its website. The League of Social Democrats of Vojvodina has urged the provincial government to seek protection for the rights of Vojvodina citizens from the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, since, as the party put it, the decision is a violation of the people's collective rights. The northern Serbian province opened its office in Brussels in October 2011, as a part of Serbia's EU mission, with the aim to provide foreign investments and better access to European regional funds. The law on establishing the jurisdiction of Vojvodina was declared valid by a decree of then Serbian president Boris Tadic and has been implemented since January 1, 2010, whereas the Vojvodina assembly proclaimed its Statute on December 14, 2009.
