U.S. analyst Charles Kupchan says that a goal of U.S. officials’ visit is to present the U.S. preferences in the policy of the new Serbian government. The Georgetown University professor believes that U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Philip Gordon and his deputy Philip Reeker are not coming to Belgrade to influence the composition of the new government. “U.S. officials won’t influence composition of government” According to Kupchan, the U.S. is more concerned about the policy than about specific persons and hopes that Serbia will stay on the EU pathway and that it will not question progress made in the Kosovo issue. “I would be surprised if the U.S. tried to intervene in any way. This is exclusively up to parties in Serbia and negotiations between key players,” he told Radio Free Europe. The U.S. analyst added that the U.S. officials were worried about Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) leader Ivica Dacic and President Tomislav Nikolic’s statements. “Some Dacic and Nikolic’s messages increase concern about regression in important regional issues, so I think that the U.S. and the EU will send a message that it is important to remain on the course of progress that has been made regarding Kosovo and that Serbia’s pro-European orientation will depend on whether or not it stays on the course,” Kupchan stressed. Reeker arrived for a three-day visit to Belgrade on Tuesday and Gordon will visit Serbia on July 8-9. Philip Reeker Tanjug
