KFOR soldiers have been deployed near a building in northern Kosovska Mitrovica where an office of the Pristina government is set to be open. The Hungarian troops serving in the NATO mission in Kosovo are deployed there, along with several vehicles and an armored personnel carrier. Troops, armored vehicle, police guard Pristina's office They are located on the so-called eastern bridge, some 50 meters away from the building that is still under construction. The building itself is located in the ethnically mixed Bosnjacka Mahala neighborhood. The town of Kosovska Mitrovica is divided by the Ibar River into its northern, mostly Serb, and southern, ethnic Albanian parts. Two vehicles of the Kosovo police (KPS) are also located near the site. On Wednesday, the government in Pristina named Adrijana Hadzic as head of the office. Serbia sees its opening as "yet another provocation coming from Pristina". Ministry for Kosovo State Secretary Oliver Ivanovic told B92 late on Wednesday that the office "will not be able to function, because it will mean that UNMIK administration will shut down, which will in turn strengthen the Serbian administration, that will gain more jurisdiction". The controversy of the attempt of the Kosovo Albanian government to gain foothold in the north stems from the fact the area is populated by Serbs who reject its authority, as well as the unilateral declaration of independence made by ethnic Albanians in February 2008.
