Although Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic has said that the EU will not ask Serbia to recognize Kosovo, analysts agree that nothing new happened in Brussels. The analysts told daily Politika that the messages from the EU had not been precise. Nikolic’s Brussels visit “brought nothing new” Editor of Challenges of European Integration, a bi-monthly magazine, Nikola Jovanovic believes that Nikolic did not plan to establish contacts but to represent himself as a constructive interlocutor. “He succeeded in it bearing in mind that he made very mild statements that could be interpreted in a very flexible manner. He did not close the door or hinted at some possible new policy,” he stressed. According to him, Nikolic’s proposal that the future PM should head the Belgrade-Pristina talks is not a “good idea”. “You cannot propose to foreigners who would lead our side in the negotiations without consensus with other factors,” Jovanovic said. Political analyst Dejan Vuk Stankovic says that Nikolic’s earlier statements are not much different from the ones he is making now and that he came up with the idea that the PM should lead the talks once he realized how sensitive the talks are. “If a prime minister of one and a prime minister of the other sides took part in the negotiations, then they would have an inter-state character,” Faculty of Political Sciences professor Predrag Simic noted.
